Philosophy & Parenthood

Dash met up with a teacher-friend two weeks ago and he shared this story about a "strangely relativistic" parent he encountered in school.

"Relativistic" in that the parent does not seem to think that it is appropriate to impose his values on his child. Apparently this parent came to school and told the teacher of his child that he doesn't think that he [as a father] has the right to tell his child what to do or what not to do.

Interesting, obviously this parent had done some degree of epistemological self-reflection : ) Well, Dash thinks that it is the duty as a parent to provide some form of value system for his child. But to address the "relativistic" concerns the parent has, the value system need not be so rigid that it does not leave room for the child's inquiry of the values and/or the assumptions.

Dash wonders if most parents hv actually thought abt this issue before they launch into parenthood : ) Heh!
