Where do we go from here?

This is the Mississippi River. The picture was taken about three years ago in a cool breezy evening. We see a long bridge that allows land transportation to transverse the mighty River. We see the cruise ship languidly sailing down the River.

And the slow sunset. That achingly beautiful sunset dimming the sky into near darkness, for the stars were not out that night in Mississippi.

I could hear the piercing horns of the cruise ship and the zoom zoom sounds of the vehicles. But those were distant rumbles. From where I stood, the singular cry of the lonely seagull was what I heard most distinctively.

Where do we go from here? I go not to the straight roads of the bridge, nor the lolling stream of the ship. I yearn for that seagull. For that freedom. And for the wisdom and courage to do what is right.

That tiny seagull centers the picture and speaks for many others whose cries are silenced.
